The Trouble with Islam A feisty young Muslim woman, Irshad Manji, has kicked up quite a stir with her critiques of Islam. Her opponents say she is anti-Islam, but in truth, she has discovered a buried tradition within Islam that advocates freedom of inquiry. We'll take a look at what Ms. Manji has to say and why people are so upset about it. |
| 9 May Janet Kuller |
Searching for the "Goddess of Many Hats" Bring Mom for an introspective look at motherhood from the words of several Northlake women. Hear Shannon, our Religious Education Director, tell the story of Peace Day, founded by Julia Ward Howe. Wear a sprig of greenery if your mother is living, or a white blossom if she is passed on. Special music by Ben Musa, on bass |
| 16 May Reverend Amanda Aikman |
The Kenny G-ification of American Culture
This sermon will explain why you get so anxious at the mall, why a truly dreadful musician is so popular and why an appallingly bad painter is the most successful artist of all time. With musical illustrations. |
| 23 May Shannon Gordon, RE Director |
Give me that Old Time RE Religion! And what must we give our children? In our community of love and care given by UUs, our children grow in their own religious way, catching it from us! Come for a service that calls us to live out our covenant to our children. Be inspired by the words of the great thinkers of our early religious education movement. |
| 30 May Larry Fennema |
Stories of our Passed There will be no breakfast for this Memorial Day weekend service, such as we have had the past few years. Larry Fennema will lead a service in which we shall celebrate the memory and stories of our family members who have "passed." You are invited to bring photos of them. Tables will be set up for display. Write your name on a "tent card" and set it in front of your photos. Come a little early to walk around and share stories with one another. We may be assisted by the Anonymous 4 and Thornton Wilder. |
