Americans are 5% of the world’s population and use 40% of the world’s energy. It would take four Earths to suppor today’s 6 billion peole if everyone consumed at the level that we do. This is not sustainable! We simply need to cut back. Tim Allen nothwithstanding, what we need is less demand for power, not more.

- What’s your environmental footprint? Find out!
- Insulate your home. Do an energy audit to determine air leakage at windows and doors. There are many ways to do this; browsing Puget Sound Energy’s site is good for starters.
- Turn down your thermostat 1 degree.Better yet — get a thermostat that you ccn program for sleep and “away” times.
- Buy compact fluorescent bulbs that last ten times longer than standard incandescent bulbs, and use one quarter to one third of the energy.
- And don’t forget the simplest thing of all: turn off the lights when you leave a room!
