Northlake Seamsters Union
The Northlake Seamsters Union (“NSU”, AKA Quilting Circle) was founded nearly six years ago by women who shared an interest in quilt making. Some of us were neophytes, others veterans. Together we have learned from each other and have shared many laughs along the way. From the beginning we set a goal of giving to our church community and to the community at large. Money has been donated for a new pulpit, upgrading the playground equipment, sanctuary lighting improvement and now for special sanctuary furnishings. We have made quilts for the neo–natal intensive care unit of Evergreen Hospital and microwavable buckwheat bags for residents of Tent City 4. Our funds have come from annual holiday bazaars and, for the past four years, raffle quilts.
As a community service, the NSU has had an ongoing project to produce baby quilts for the NICU at Evergreen Hospital in Kirkland. We delivered 16 more finished quilts in December. That brings our total to 40 little quilts so far. We plan to make a larger quilt to donate to the Evergreen Hospice during 2007.
The NSU is a group of NUUC members and friends who share an interest in quilting and other arts. In addition to making quilts for ourselves, to donate and to raffle, we have raised money to use for the sanctuary (lighting upgrades and a new pulpit) from raffles and the Annual Craft Fair.
The proceeds from the quilts raffled in 2004 and 2005 were used to commission the building of a new pulpit that was designed for the church and was dedicated to the memory of Mary Leber in November 2006. The ongoing fundraising efforts by the Seamsters Union will continue to provide improvements and enhancements to the Northlake Sanctuary.
The Seamsters Union meets regularly on the third Monday of every month at 7 PM at the church. All people interested in quilting and crafting are welcome! For additional information, please contact Kathy Bean (425–788–0637 or ).
