NUUC Men’s Group Forms
NUUC has not had a Men’s Group for several years and with the completion of the Chapel a wonderful thing happened. A NEW NUUC Men’s Group took shape at the home of Mitch Levy on Saturday morning, February 28, 2009.
A hearty breakfast was served to 12 NUUC Men ranging in age from 18 years old to 89+ years old amidst a lot of wonderful conversation. Ideas were shared and stories told and men who had only seen each other in church had the time and opportunity to really get to know each other.
After breakfast the Chalice was lit with a Gumby butane lighter which sparked a lot of discussion resulting in the conclusion that Gumby must be a UU because 1. Gumby is GREEN, and 2. Gumby is Flexible… true UU traits.
This FIRST meeting of the NUUC Men’s group was to define who we are and provide some structure. The discussion on “identity” was very interesting… why do we exist. With everyone having an opportunity to describe what a UU Men’s group is to them we were able to agree that what we would like to do is COMMUNITY SERVICE outside of NUUC. We would like to represent NUUC in the City of Kirkland by volunteering for projects to help people in our greater community. It is important for us to continue volunteering for projects within NUUC but we want to make visible that NUUC also contributes to the betterment of the community of Kirkland as friends and neighbors.
The hardest part of out first meeting was trying to decide on a regular time and place to meet. Although there were only 12 men we had about 18 suggestions. It was finally decided to meet the 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month and members would take turns hosting in their home and providing breakfast and leading the meeting with a topic for discussion or an activity.
So far we are off to a good start with 12 men attending the first meeting and several others have expressed interest and have been added to the email list bringing the total of NUUC Men’s Group to 25.
A second meeting was hosted on March 14th by Father and Son, Jeff and James Copeland to the delight of the 10 additional men that showed up for a breakfast of pancakes, eggs, sausage, and coffee.
