Northlake had not had a Men’s Group for several years, but with the completion of the Chapel a wonderful thing happened. A new NUUC Men’s Group took shape at the home of Mitch Levy on Saturday morning, February 28, 2009. A hearty breakfast was served to 12 NUUC men ranging in age from 18 to 89 years amidst a lot of wonderful conversation. Ideas were shared and stories told and men who had only seen each other in church now had the time and opportunity to get to know one another.

The group has continued to meet regularly since then, generally on the first and third Saturday of each month. There are over 40 guys on our email list, with about 25 who attend consistently. Average attendance at each session is around 15. Different men take turns hosting, which involves preparing breakfast for the group (we do seem to love our bacon or sausage) and selecting a discussion topic.

We’ve also organized fun outings such as trips to see the Everett Aquasox (Mariners’ farm team), the Everett Silvertips hockey team (including dinner for 22 at Alligator Soul restaurant), and a Rat City Rollergirls roller derby extravaganza.

But we’re far from an insular group. The NUUC Men’s Group has become renowned for co-hosting (with the RE Committee) a spaghetti-feed and movie night at the church, for hosting Mother’s Day breakfast, and for presenting Father’s Day worship services. We’ve also reached out to our Muslim neighbors down the street at the IMAN Center and had a joint breakfast meeting with them, with another in the works.

Thanks to Mitch Levy’s initial leadership, we even have a charter, which sets forth our purpose and mission. That is set forth below. NUUC Men’s Group Charter

• Purpose: NUUC Men’s group exists to promote friendship and community among the men of Northlake Unitarian Universalist Church.


• Mission: To seek out meaningful and worthwhile projects in support of NUUC and the greater Kirkland community.


• Guidelines: Membership is open to all males 18 and older.


• Privacy and Respect: In the event that private or confidential matters are shared, it is the responsibility of all members to respect that confidentiality.
